MATCHDAY 3: Magdeburg v. Schalke

Schalke took on Magdeburg, as Schalke will play their third away match in a row.

Schalke fresh off their first round Pokal cup win vs. Aalen are taking on Magdeburg who lost to Offenbach in the cup match.


It is Schalke who strike first, at the 8th minute, a beautiful right footed curling strike from just outside the box on the left side after a quick Karaman pass, Moussa Sylla gets his 3rd goal of the early season.

Schalke lead 1-0.


Sylla again had a chance at the 18th minute, from a long ball delivery Sylla fights to try and get the shot through on a slight breakaway but Magdeburg keeper Reimann makes a save.


Sylla also was involved with some good passes and trying to set up Karaman to score, but nothing came of the chances created.


At the 19th minute Schalke's Murkin had a great defensive play when he rushes into the box to break up a great passing attempt from Magdeburg, as Murkin in full slide, intercepts the pass inside the box and is able to clear the ball with a sliding clearance.


At the 40th minute mark Magdeburg get onto the score board, when Murkin fails to clear the ball twice in the Schalke box, On his second attempt he slips and the ball goes right to the feet of Amaechi's feet and he plays the ball to Marcus Mathisen who makes no mistake and puts the ball into the back of the net.

Magdeburg 1 - Schalke 1.


At the 45th minute, with 3 minutes of time added to the first half it will be Magdeburg that take advantage. A shot from Martijn Kaars in close results in a quick and big save from Schalke's keeper Heekeren. The ball rebounds off him, but the ball is spinning and still had enough momentum to keep moving towards the goal line and the ball goes off Heekeren and rebounds to his right side spinning past the goal line to his right, Aydin tries to get there and clear it but the ball is already past the line.


HALFTIME:

Magdeburg 2 - Schalke 1.


The 2nd half has some back and forth chances by both teams.

The first big chance comes at the 53rd minute as Sylla again sets up Karaman on the left side. Karaman tries to finish the chance with a tight angle shot and keeper Reimann makes the kick save to knock the ball away.


The next several minutes see Magdeburg apply lots of pressure on Schalke with forcing Heekeren to make some good saves, including a 55th min. shot by El Hankouri and a arm save by Heekeren on that chance.


The match still sees pressure from Magdeburg but at the 76th min Schalke get a chance, and it is new Schalke signing from this past week that sets up the Schalke chance. Fleshly subbed into the match at the 72nd mark, Christopher Antwi-Adjei on the right side crosses the ball into the box and Kenan Karaman is there to head the ball into the back of the net.

Magdeburg 2- Schalke 2.


A close call for Schalke at the 89th minute when the referee calls for a penalty shot awarded to Magdeburg on a Sanchez clearance, but after VAR and referee Timo Gerlach goes to the monitor to review the play, he sees Sanchez is first to the ball and clears it away.

No Penalty is the call and the original call is overturned.

The final biggest chance of the match comes from a Karaman freekick at the 90 +5 minute.

Karaman goes for the top corner from his shot and Reimann dives to just make the save.


The whistle blows and the match ends a 2-2 draw.

The results see Schalke at 9th spot in the table with 4pts.


Next match for Schalke ( 9th, 4pts) will be Köln ( 8th, 4pts) at home.
